At McDonald DDS, we offer many ways to replace missing teeth, including dental implants. This realistic tooth replacement gives your teeth the most natural look and feel. The dental implant procedure is lengthy, but it is well worth the results you get.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are more than a fake tooth – they include a root that fuses with your jawbone, giving the tooth its most realistic appearance when tooth loss occurs. The root of the dental implant is a titanium screw. We implant the screw into your jawbone where it fuses with your bone. As it becomes one with the bone, the artificial tooth has a solid base to sit on, giving you full functionality of your mouth again.
How it Works
Getting dental implants requires several appointments with our dentists. If you still have the affected teeth in your mouth, we must extract them. Depending on the complexity of the extraction, we may be able to combine this appointment with the placement of the titanium screws. If it was a complicated extraction, though, we may have to wait until your gums heal.
After we place the screws into your gums, we have to let your mouth heal. Placing the titanium screws in your mouth is a surgical procedure. It takes a while for the area to heal. In the meantime, we place a temporary tooth on the screw so that you can talk, chew, and smile easily.
We typically have to wait eight to twelve weeks for the area to completely heal. We can then place the platform, called an abutment, for the artificial tooth. After placing the abutment, our dentists take impressions of your mouth. The impressions get sent to our lab technicians who then create a fake tooth or teeth that match your mouth exactly.
Fitting the Implants
The final step is getting the implants. It may feel like it takes forever to get to this point, but it is worth the wait! Our dentists will place the artificial tooth or teeth that look just like your natural teeth, on the abutment. We will make sure the tooth is comfortable and that you are happy with its appearance before making it a permanent part of your mouth. Keep in mind, you may have to come back for a few adjustments as we make sure the tooth or teeth are a good fit.
Are you a Good Candidate?
Our dentists are experts in all types of teeth replacements. We will go over all of your options with you and help you decide if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Typically, you must have a strong jawbone, healthy gums, and not have any underlying medical conditions.
If you are not a good candidate for dental implants, our dentists can help you find a viable replacement for your missing teeth. We have many years of experience in dental restorations and are happy to help you find a solution for your missing teeth.
